Fixing up a musket, need an engraver.

    Hi,

During this lockdown, I've been overhauling my cheap musket. I've stripped the stock back down to wood and re-carved it, binned all the metal and remade everything in brass.

One of the bits of brass I'm making is a nameplate in the wrist. Apparently most guns that had these fitted back in the day never had a name or marking engraved into them, but I want mine done.

Does anybody know of a decent engraver that can hand engrave into a small brass plate? The plate will be a 35mm tall, 2mm think brass oval. It'll need to be hand engraved as the plate will be curved to the stock and I also want a quite busy single capital letter, so I doubt a standard computer engraver would be able to do it, BUT maybe it could ????

    Any thoughts?

How about a trophy shop ?

The one near me has a CNC engraving setup if I remember right.

Have it engraved then fit it or if done by hand it may be able to be done after fitting .

    Hi,
Trophy shops can't do this sort of thing for a few reasons, it'll need doing buy hand.
It seems hand engraving is a hard thing to find these days.
I've only managed to find one person so far in the US at a quote of $200 :-0

I think I need to keep looking :-)
Must be somebody in the UK in a shed happy to do it for a reasonable cost.
Looks like I have hours more time searching the pages of FB

It might be handy if you can find a small gunmaker in this country that will do it.

I have an antique rifle. The Gunmaker retired in 1868 and the engraving with his name on has gone a bit feint. I would not mind having it re-done. I might squeeze £50 per side for someone to so it but over that I think it can stay as it is.

If you find someone I would be interested to know and what they charge you.

    Atb.

Ps. I read that you threw some of the bits away. You should always hang to stuff like that you never know when it comes in handy.

I have a few people now I'm in contact with, as soon as I find the right one, I'll post up his link.
Trust me, the parts I put in the bin are not worth keeping, they are bad at best, nobody would want to use them.

Try looking at clock restorer's. They do the work you need on old clock faces and watch cases. Also try local jewellers as they do this sort of work on bracelets and watches.

"Engrave it flat and bend it to shape"

That can't work for a number of reasons.

I have found an engraver in the UK.
So far, all the signs are very good, but I'll not give any details until my small job is back, (now sent off).
As long as it all goes to plan and I'm happy, I will give the details out if I'm allowed to.

    The engraving turned out perfect.
    It cost me £25.
I will give out the details once a mod tells me it's OK to do so.
If not, PM me and I can give the details privately, the engraver has given permission.

The engraving is basic and simple as that's exactly what I asked for.
Trust me, if you want OTT, she can do it!
    Purdey use her services
