Remembering an interesting old Sussex Armoury Jackel?

    Hi all,

Many years ago I used to go to a funny little shop in Shirley Southampton, I think it was called Handleys, it was a strange little place as it was a second hand shop but mainly sold air rifles and fishing gear, his pellets where the cheapest in the area, once I was in there he had an old plastic military stocked Sussex Armoury Jackel (like the Hi power, firepower) BUT this is where it differs from the normal ones, it had a wooden butt from the pistol grip backwards (like you would see on the early Belgium FN SLR rifles), anyway I bought it and had it for a while, now I'm not sure what happened to the rifle in the end, I may have sold/swapped it with Pat (Mr. Gen) as we've done a lot of trading of stuff in the past, anyway I was in the loft the other day looking through boxes when a photo of said rifle suddenly appeared, it's not the best of photo's but it shows the wooden stock before I dissected it for my own pleasure as I thought at the time it was a bit of an oddity and just wanted to see how well it had been done.

Now I'm not sure if this was a proper factory rifle or a very good conversion as it was very well done and the join between the plastic stock and wooden butt was very clean and crisp (didn't look like it had been knocked up in a shed somewhere) and even the bolt that was fixed into the butt went through a hole in the back of the stock and had a nut that done up to secure it to the stock, the access area to get at said nut was in a square hollowed out area which had a little plastic square cover that pushed into the hole, so to me seemed like something professionally done.

Not sure how I can get said photo shown on here?

An interesting rifle which I often wish I'd kept because of the curiosity factor.

    Hi Pete

yes you sold the action to me years ago and you mentioned the wooden stock at the time.

Handleys was owned by John Kershaw who was a real character, a thousand stories about any subject you wished to mention and every one true and first hand, sadly John dies a few years ago and the shop was sold.

I still have that Jackal action now restocked somewhere......

    Sussex Armory Jackel

I worked in Shirley in the early 1960's and spent one of my earliest wages on a boxed Walther LP53 for £10. Still got it. Great shop. Cheers Pete

It may well have been a factory prototype knocked up in the R&D section of Sussex Armoury. They used a stockmaker called Moon based on a farm somewhere to make small quantities of wooden stocks. He specialised in target rifle stocks but could have been leaned on by Mr Marriot Smith to help produce a prototype for evaluation?

In one of the last issues of Sporting Air Rifle magazine, there was an article with SLR and AK47 style air rifles with wooden stocks - I suspect this was the origin of yours ?

I remember that. SA also pictured an AK profiled Jackal in some of their advertising.

I'm intrigued and would like to see a scan of the rifle found in the old Southampton shop.

As far as I am aware the AK47 lookalike was only made by the Phoenix Arms company, I have one and it is a true hybrid of Susses Armoury parts and bits presumably from ISP which would go on to be the changes in design of the first Air arms models from 1982 onwards.

I'll see what I can do, it's not the best of photo's, I did try taking a photo with my mobile but you can't see the detail of the butt very well, I'll see if I can get it scanned.

I remember Handleys well - secondhand guns and w@nk mags - what more could a teenager want? Chris was the chap who did the gun repairs, nice chap. I bought my first CO2 revolver there, when they were taken off FAC. They used to stock an unusual PCP which I think were made by a someone from Dibden Purlieu....

Yes I remember now, being of rather lanky stature, I remember the first time I went in there and saw all the guns in front of me, I then looked to my right at the cabinet and had a face full of said mags, I did think it rather odd and I still can't remember what was in that cabinet, never did manage to look past the "big tits special"
