    Sharp Shooters

Following on from yesterday's informative debate.

Using a light weight spring piston air rifle, can anyone claim to reliably place five shots in a five pence group at fifty yards?

    Springer

Not many I would have thought, best asked on Shooting the Breeze, I think the world champion FT springer champ is on there, ask him if he can as they shoot to 55yards in FT.

No problem at all with a 'Harrington Gat rifle', though I haven't been able to find one since the 1980's. Today's rifle's are just not up to the kind of standard set by these. The good old days eh

Is that where the centre of each hole can be spanned by a 5p coin ?

On a perfect day, with a good rested position I might manage it with my TX200. Not every time though, and the TX is not a lightweight as standard - mine has a load of lead in the stock which makes it about 11lbs. It also has a prosport spring and top hat, carefully lapped barrel and carefully done crown.

A "springer group" thread would be fun.

OK well I will step forward.....

at 50 yards indoors, bench rest sitting down with the rifle on a beanbag and zeroed at that range on the day I have several springers with which I can do 1" groups on a good day.

None of them are standard out of the box, all are tuned and the most likely to achieve this would be my 25mm .177 venom HW80, closely followed by a tuned .22 pro elite, if it has to be a light gun I would go with a .1777 HW85 but again it is in a walnut stock with some tuned internals.

From HFT prone position, on a perfectly still day, with my TX200 in a target stock, I can sometimes (but not consistently) put 10 shots in about 13mm edge to edge group at 45 yards.

So to answer the question. Nope, not a chance. And springers is all I shoot. A generous person would even say I'm a good shot sometimes
