what size is the cast bullet?
r7 is too fast but can be used as a reduced load as in ed harris etc
if your sticking to vit 140 then i would work up around 41gn mark
but you do need to slug your bore

RL7 is ideal for lead as a reduced charge. consistantly lower pressures than most of the other options according to my manual

I don't load. 303 but do for 7.62x54 which has a similar case capacity. With a 185gr cast and 36 gr of N140 I get 2034 fps which is maximum velocity for accuracy in my rifle. RL7 is very good, start at 26 gr and work up. What bullet design are you using? Most moulds for. 303 and 7.62 Russian are 180 gr and heavier.

    I have used 35gns of N140 with a 185gn gas checked bullet in 303.
    Approx 2100fps.
    They shoot fine.

    What manual are you using?

I found a nice load for my Rifle No1 using Reloder7 and 174SMK bullets a few years ago but I cannot find the reference to it now.
Good deals with: Muskett, Dreben, roger.kerry, TALL, Helidave1, Chelseablue, Leeroy7031, Mousemann, pnuk, Practical, NEWFI, HOOGS, Webb22, lazybones1416 and deanw5262 among others. Thanks Guys.

    Thanks.
I had an older data sheet/manual with Reloder7 and 174FMJs listed and I cannot find it just now.
My workshop is all packed up as it's being rebuilt, can't wait to unpack the container and get my stuff out again.

But I have a nice load with 174gn SMKs and it shoots lovely with less recoil than the surplus stuff. I think it was 36gn of Reloder7

I have used it for .223 with fmjs but for cast loads the charge is way lower
