    Sizing down lead balls

As per my earlier thread I needed some 5.2mm lead balls And only available ones are around 5.5mm.

I made a little jig to grind them down with a 5.2mm deep flat bowl.

    Works really well:

Brilliant! I bet they might even be more consistent than the originals?

Now that's ingenious and fettling of the highest order.

i love it, very neat... Just watch all that lead dust though.. wear a mask / wash your hands / rinse the balls afterward etc
Always looking for any cheap, interesting, knackered "project" guns. Thanks, JB.

Love it! The best ideas are always the simplest. Incidentally, I have a vernier gauge just like yours.

    Cheers,
You definitely have to be conscious of the dust.
It was a surgical gloves and a 3M cartridge respirator job for sure.

I knew someone who cleaned his brass pistol cartridges for reloading in a home made tumbler driven by a slow microwave motor with a timer.

Perhaps something in the same vein can be achieved by putting all the oversize balls in the tumbler, let the enclosed tumbler do the job for a while and greatly reduce any hazards from lead dust . When done, the tumbler can be removed and opened in a controlled way such as under water to wash away any abrasive dust.
It's just a thought though aimed primarily at removing yourself from close proximity of the lead dust.
The outcome would have to be evaluated against the uniformity of the resized balls to see if it's viable or not.

Thanks Matt, I'd forgotten that earlier thread. I will definitely give it a try. I also sourced some 4mm brass tubing a while ago with the intention of making custom darts. When I have figured out the bst way to do it, I will also be giving that a try.

That is superb. Maybe just what I need to size down some 5.5 to 5.4 for a Gevaret pump up. Can I ask what your bowl is made from?
Maybe water downpipe? The rest looks like timber?
    Cheers, Phil

    Hi Phil,
Yes exactly, water down pipe and a disc of 18mm ply.
I laid the slice of pipe on a board, dropped a layer of lead balls in and dropped in the ply disc so it sat on the bb’s. Then glued the ply disc in the tube from above.

A disc of 180grit on the board that sits inbound of the slice of plastic tube gives you the reduced depth to grind the bbs down.

A bolt through the disc and into a hole in the board to locate, and a few size checks as you go and you can get the size you want.

Safety first, plenty of P.P.E and clean up after...

    Cheers,
    Matt
