Yeah, that's the thing with slugs... — because of their larger sidewall surface they create more friction with the barrel, and so they loose some energy....

With a FAC P15 I went from 30FPE to 27FPE when switching from the 16gr JSB domed pellet to a 22gr slug....

I still have to try and see what happens with my sub12 PCP.

NSA and Griffin make fairly light slugs that could work (I HOPE!) at those power levels (not for hollow point expansion, mind you, but for a high BC projectile (that requires very accurate ranging!). 😊

Tom Holland of Field Target Tech makes slugs for .177cal, as low as 10 grains light.

So many options! It's a great time to be an airgunner! 👍🏼😄

The 23 grain H&N slugs through my FAC Uragan caused the muzzle velocity to drop from 900fps (with 18.13 JSB heavies) to 800fps, but because of the extra weight of the slugs the energy stayed the same @ 32.6ft lbs.
One shot, one kill. Not luck, just skill.

I cannot help but notice that of your acronyms, you have quoted F&D and R&D but omitted DFM - perhaps the most important of all irrespective of pellet, bullet or quarry, FPE or FPS etc.

    Steyr, 😊

please enlighten me — what is DFM?
    Same as DRT?

Thing I find interesting is the deformation of the FX slugs, the pics in post #52 at 28fpe echo the deformation AAR got at 40m in .22 at 38fpe
Yet when I shot the .25 at similar range I got practically zero deformation from 42fpe

I'd like to see tests of the .25 with a bit more power at 40-50yds in to gel, to see if they need more velocity to expand,
or whether they're just a bit too thick where the .22 is the perfect thickness to turn inside out & therefore transfer all it's impact energy.

4-Part Series on Hollow Point Specs, Performance, and Test Results

This thread is PART (4b) of a four-part series I posted today. The other threads explain the mechanics of killing, which projectiles kill better, and which HP pellets are available (detailed specs of .22cal @ US). Links to the other parts you’ll find below.

Here’s an overview of the series:

    ● PART (1) Quarry: What kills’em dead – the Mechanics of Killing
    • What kills is a Permanent HOLE in the quarry – nothing else. Only crushed tissue kills, not “energy dumped,” nor a “temporary wound cavity,” nor “hydrostatic shock.”
    • For the HOLE to kill – it must be in the right place in the quarry: brain/spine or heart/lungs or arteries/veins (to cause hemorrhaging).
    • The projectiles that make a Better HOLE in the quarry are –– larger, faster, bulldozer-nose, expanding projectiles.
    http://www.airgunbbs.com/showthread....ling&p=7977492

    ● PART (2) How Much Hollow Point Expansion Does How Much More Damage?
    • A larger projectile makes a larger HOLE.
    • So, how much larger is the HOLE if I go from .177 cal to .25 cal? (results in Table 1)
    • And how much larger is the HOLE if my hollow point projectile expands 1/10 of an inch? Or 1mm? (results in Table 2)
    http://www.airgunbbs.com/showthread....mage&p=7977495

    ● PART (3) Hollow Point Pellets – Comparison of Specs & Performance
The attached HP Pellet Specs & Performance Chart (.22cal) answers some of the following questions:
    • Which HP projectiles expand better to make a Better HOLE in the quarry? –– The faster, softer HP projectiles with larger, deeper HP cups, and expansion aids do!
    • What HP pellets are out there? And how do they compare (specs!)?
    • How far could I shoot a certain HP pellet and still expect expansion (given the power of my gun)?
    • Some HP are really long and might not fit into my magazine...: How long are the long ones really?
    http://www.airgunbbs.com/showthread....ison&p=7977496

    ● PART (4) Hollow Points – Testing How Much They Expand and How Far They Penetrate
Every hollow point projectile (pellet or slug) performs differently, in line with its specs and the conditions. Find a collection of Projectile Expansion and Penetration Test results for both HP pellets and slugs.

I hope this will be helpful to some!
