    Home made ballistic gel

Anyone know if there's a recognised recipie/ratio for a home made ballistic gel ??

I made some up, but .25 sub-12 @ 25yds went straight through a 10cm thick block so probably not thick/strong enough.

    ta.

I remember as a teenager pinching my mum's jelly cubes from the cupboard to shoot into. ASI Commando, firing .22 pellets backwards which mushroomed nicely in the cubes. That's a lot denser than any diluted gelatine.

10cm is not much at all - even for sub 12. Probably too little for sub 6.

Mrs. AAR cooks up some gel used for pellet testing in this one, right at the start of the vid https://youtu.be/AudT0EhDolI
Be good. And if you can't be good, be good at being bad.

Well if you refer to the AAR vid in the link post #6 he gets around 150mm at a range of about 1 foot, as I said in post #1 my gel was at 25yds

Thanks for the links chaps, I'd watched the AAR one & made my gel to the same ratio as Mrs AAR 160g ltr, I only had 144g so used 900cc's.

That's about 17% by weight, & in Styers link it states 10% by weight is "standard for ballistic test labs"

I guess I just need bigger blocks, better order more gellitine

If I remember right, testing should be a steel bb at 600 fps (10 pumps on a Crossman 760) to get 95mm penetration. Something like that.

Is this any good to you?

How to make ballistic gel (for target shooting)

Will need: measuring cup, Gelatine, water, two containers

Two packs of gelatine (white powdery substance in small sachet, unflavoured)
    pour into one container,
add 3/4 cup of water to measuring jug
pour the water into the gelatine
slowly and carefully stir the gelatine, try to keep air bubbles from forming
put the gelatine solution into the fridge for 3 or 4 hours after this timethe gelatine should feel more solid (soft but not hard set)
Fill bowl with hot water, place gelatine container in hot water to melt the gel (takes about 10 minutes)
While waiting spray some cooking spray (oil) onto your second container, spray all the inside.
Gel should now be melted and aliquid with no large chunks of hardened gel
slowly pour the molten gel into the second container, try to avoid forming any air bubbles
Put the mixture back into the fridge, this time for at least 12 hours
After it has cooled the ballistic gel is ready for testing, simply knock it out of the container.

Sorry no use at all because there are no quantities/ratios, but thanks for making the effort.

I'm now set that 160-200g of 250 Bloom gelatine per ltr is the way to go, with an old 1/2 gallon ice cream tub as the mould.

From what I remember from work a 20% solution was used for testing.
