Best spring for BSA Improved Model D

Hi, any views on best replacement main spring?

The one coming out is a single unit, I see chambers sells :-

    Mainspring-Airgun L/H & R/H Pair, MS017, Airgun Standard Mainspring, Pair (Flat section)

(with the above would anyone say a washer is needed between the spring sections? )

    Are these any good?
    Any other suggestions? cheaper?
Looking for smooth non harsh action, power not that important but up at 8-9ft/lbs I suppose is about right??
    Cheers
    John

I found an Airsporter spring worked well in a model B after it had a few coils cut off & the cut face was polished up. Just ensured it didnt get too hot when cut & polished. Not sure what length I cut it to but obviously you need to ensure it doesent bind. Think I allowed about 1.5" of pre load. Might be worth a look at some info on spring conditioning too....?

    Spring

I tried knibbs, chambers and loads of other springs including the two part spring in my very early BSA's. I find fair few springs too loose on the spring guide which generates more recoil. I settled on the BSA Meteor spring in the end that seems to shoot nice. Also SFS spring is good but needs coils collapsing.

Meteor Mk1 to 5 or cut down Airsporter works for me.

i've had some minor success in increasing spring guide diameter by using semi rigid PTFE heatshrink tubing. Softens things up and almost acts like a Delrin guide. The normal heatshrink is too soft and wears quick but the semi rigid is quite robust.
