Depends on how far you normally shoot, I usually zero at about 25 yards as I tend to only shoot rats.
Once you set your zero at what ever distance you want, practice what mill dot you would need at closer or further distances, and take note.

Such a personal preference. For myself I like a 40yard zero. That gives me a first zero of 15yards. I particularly like this with .177 Sniper Lights 7.5grains 10.8 ft lbs.
Between 15-40 I under aim one mark on my SR6 reticule which is nice and easy. Less hold over at longer ranges.
