    Wash n Lube

    Hey there everyone,

I have heard of washing and lubing pellets, what are the advantages of doing this?
Does anyone on here do this and does it improve the shooting, accuracy, keep the barrel cleaner?
can anyone shed any light on this for me please.

    Thanks

    Welcome to the forum.

I have never washed and lubed pellets. Just a quick visual inspection and use straight from the tin.

The majority of people who wash and lube (maybe combined with size checking & weighing in many cases) will be competition users. Some pellets do exhibit more lead dust / swarf in the tins, so I'd expect these to benefit the most.

We'd need some people on who follow the regime to report on their findings. My guess also would be that psychologically it's another box ticked, so one thing less to worry about / blame? And I can't fault that.

I seem to remember from what I've read previously that, with the advent of better pellets these days, many shooters who previously prepared their pellets no longer do so?

It is an effort to produce consistency.
Like selecting a batch that suits your barrel and even a specific die.
    Lead content Vs antimony content.
Some pellets can have lots of swarf. Others covered in graphite and other crap.
Head size uniformity is important and many will use a sizer although imho, unless its a damned good one, your more likely to damage than fix. Skirt size is less important as I see it... its gonna have 180 bar plus going up its chufter.....
Do not use dish soap. Contains salts.....
Weight can vary a lot so weighing isnt bad.

Generally, a good regime will get to that extra point or so in a comp.

Is it worth it... personal shout. I used to do some of these things. I dont bother now.

The only other issue being Mikey Boy, that during the colder Winter months the tin isn't exactly cosy, so I'll have to devise some sort of dingaling warmer!

Hope you and the family are all keeping well.

    KP-R,

    I would suggest you :

    1) Wash, dry & lube a few tins of pellets

    2) Sort by head-size

    3) Sort by weight

If your will to live hasn't got up and gone by then, you must be made of very stern stuff

Like a lot of these natures of things, I have done them at some time or other - these are days of time I will never get back !

For me, none of them ever made much of a difference; as @TonyL says, just inspect each pellet from the tin.

Unless you are after the very last 0.1%, then I suspect you probably will not see much difference.

NOTE : The above refers to high quality pellets, made by the JSB, H&N, RWS, etc., etc.

Have fun & a good weekend

    Best regards

    Russ

Tried it once, but didn't see any difference from just checking the skirt out of a fresh tin

Quick answer is yes it makes a difference. Not massive but enough if you are striving for accuracy. If you weigh pellets you will find the variation is quite bad. Like a previous comment was made regarding the head being more important than the tail which is true, the head can also be effected by swarf. Cleaning actually makes the weight more consistent as well as maintaining your barrel. Competition shooters know millimetres are massive. Cleaned pellets and lubed with Beeswax polish definitely made a difference, even if only slight the effort was enough to warrant at the time.

And a response to another comment. .177 all the way.

In the case of pellets, makes no discernable difference. In other situations, recommended

Hi everyone, thanks for all the comments, something to think about.
Don't think I am quite that bothered about sizing, weighing etc...
Think also you get what you pay for and some of the better brands pellets are cleaner and better made than ever before.
    Thanks again KPR
