    Weihrauch HW30S

I bought a new plinker rifle few weeks ago. It's a Weihrauch HW30S in .177 caliber. The rifle came with a detuned 500fps mainspring so I tested velocity with that spring and then with the full power spring I ordered.

The HW30S is pretty much the same as the Beeman R-7. The Weihrauch imported version, like mine, has the deluxe front sight tunnel with 6 disc inserts included. There are 4 post shapes and two aperture types. The tapered post is installed in the tunnel and the other 5 inserts were in a small clear bag attached to the trigger guard with a red eleastic band. This is the same way my HW35 was purchased in 1980! The rifle also came with a small octagon tag tied to the trigger guard (Weihrauch tag). The white box is marked "Weihrauch Sport", "Air Rifle" and the German writing.

    Total weight = 6 lbs 0.6 oz
    Total length = 38.8"
    Barrel length = 15.55"
    Length of pull = 14.1"

HW30S Weight (Sportsman 3-9X scope + Sportsmatch 1 pc mt)
Scope with no sights = 7 lb 3.6 oz
Scope with front sight = 7 lb 5.2 oz
Scope with both sights = 7 lb 6.8 oz
Scope with muzzle break = 7 lb 6.0 oz

    Balance Point
Scope with no iron sights - balance point is 2.25" in front of trigger guard
Scope with muzzle break - balance point is 2.75" in front of trigger guard

I have a new full-power HW30S mainspring and the measurements are as follows:

    8.25" long
    .717" diameter
    28.5 coils (including the ends)
    .109" wire thickness

The detuned mainspring measured as follows:

    6.3" long
    .716" diameter
    22.5 coils (including the ends)
    .109" wire thickness

The detuned spring was obviously chopped from a full power mainspring. The spring wire and diameter are the same. One end on the spring has definitely been chopped. The end was not bent around to touch the next coil but it was ground blunt and a flat was ground on the end. This chopped end goes into the hardened piston body and the properly finished end sits against the guide.

Here is a summary of what I did to the rifle:

    -complete disassembly
    -cleaned out factory lubes
    -polished mainspring ends (80-150-220 grit)
    -beveled sharp ends on mainspring
    -stoned sides of cocking slots
-applied Macarri moly to: barrel pivot bolt, barrel pivot washers, inside of receiver forks, safety button, cocking slots, foot on cocking arm, top of cocking arm, spring guide, spring ends, piston body (inside/outside), piston seal perimeter
-burnished moly into chamber and removed excess
-a mixture of moly and pellgunoil was applied to the two pivots on the cocking arm
-applied Macarri tar to outside of spring
-sealed stock under buttplate and inletting with spar urethane

I shot about 30 pellets with the lubed spring before I ran the velocity test and had no erratic dieseling shots. Wow, this rifle is now very slick to cock.

    Previous velocities with detuned spring:

    JSB Exact --------------- 526, 516, 520, 527, 519, 519, 521, 524, 522, 523 - AVE = 522 fps
    JSB Match --------------- 572, 573, 572, 575, 573, 579, 579, 573, 574, 574 - AVE = 574 fps
    Crosman Premier ------ 522, 513, 524, 522, 515, 519, 512, 517, 525, 514 - AVE = 518 fps
    H&N Finale Match ----- 549, 546, 540, 538, 539, 537, 548, 535, 538, 544 - AVE = 541 fps
    RWS Super-H-Point --- 473, 483, 476, 473, 482, 485, 480, 482, 487, 477 - AVE = 490 fps

    Velocities with full power spring:

    JSB Exact --------- 622, 623, 623, 619, 621, 619, 621, 623, 620, 620 - AVE = 621 fps
    JSB Match --------- 672, 671, 672, 675, 673, 676, 673, 672, 673, 675 - AVE = 673 fps
    Crosman Premier - 629, 628, 633, 634, 632, 633, 634, 628, 631, 629 - AVE = 631 fps
    H&N Finale Match - 655, 651, 654, 660, 651, 658, 661, 656, 654, 655 - AVE = 656 fps
    RWS Super-H-Point - 626, 629, 623, 630, 625, 627, 630, 627, 629, 631 - AVE = 628 fps

It's interesting to see the velocities with the CPLs and Exacts using the two springs. With the weaker spring the tight fitting CPLs are slower than the Exacts but with the full power spring the Exact is slightly faster. The velocities with the Exact and CPL are very close.

After shooting all the above pellets I checked velocity again by shooting a few Super-H-Points and it was the same as during the test.

As mentioned before, the detuned spring was chopped to 6.3" and the full power spring is 8.25" long.

With the full power mainspring I will have to register this rifle so there is a good chance I will put the detuned spring back inside. The full power spring can also be chopped to give a second detuned spring.

I always wanted to try a full power HW30S and check velocity. Springs are cheap to play with and easy to shorten (detuned).

    I just love the HW30S.

I used to have one in calibre 22 with the old Maccarikit, it ran around 500 fps using the 12,65 gn Silver Bears.

I sold it but changed my mind so I bought a new one.

    This time in calibre .177.

This gun have the new Maccarikit and its scoped with a Leuopold EFR 3-9x33 in Simmons Pro-Mounts OMP. Ive also removed open sights and replaced them with a coverplate and the Beeman universal muzzlebrake.

It sits in my gunsafe now, I havent used it more then a hundred pellet yet becouse I have not time enough for all of my guns.

    Thumbs up Hw 30 s

Hi all, I have read lots of posts about the hw 30s. I have one in .177 in which I detuned for bell target in my garage it now shoots at 5-5 pounds .It’s fitted with old anshutz aperture rear sight and front globe , it is so accurate sitting in my old chair in garage cross legged why not it’s comfy I can ring the bell constantly standing up not so good but still ok it is the most beautiful little air rifle you can buy it is light comfortable to hold and hardly any recoil at the moment I am using the last of my crossman premier lights five boxes left of .177 they are perfect for my hw 30s , I just love at looking at in its gun rack with my other WH s
That’s it for the moment. All the best people.

I remember also coming across Todd's very detailed review on the HW45 a few years ago; excellent.

All this talk of the Hw30s as got me wanting a .22 with barrel weight to go with my .177 version with open sights.
A fellow club member as the scope only version and I rather fancy one myself..

    There's another one, too.

I've just noticed at the foot of this thread a section on "Similar Threads". I'd never noticed that before; guessing it's a newly enabled feature? In there, there's also a thread by Todd on HW30 accuracy......I'm just about to resurrect that one too.
