I don't want to post stuff so I was thinking when the time comes, which may be soon, that I am to sell off some of my guns, how good is putting them into an auction? Like one of those militaria things that comes up from time to time?
If you put them in an English auction, you will have to post or deliver them to the auction anyway.
If you put them in a Scots auction, you will be cutting down your audience vastly.
As already said, take into account the auction fees before committing them for sale. also bear in mind the buyer will have to pay fees and possibly outrageous postal charges so you may not realise as much as you think.
Put them into a gun shop for free and let him have commission on the sale.
A'm gonna kill that pwesky wabbit!!
You will be far batter off to advertise your stuff yourself auctions are good to buy something for yourself --but if you wanting to get a certain price sometimes a private sale is the way as you have the fee to enter the sale and then commission and VAT on top to come off your sale price --google tennets auction house and Mitchel's auction they have the type of sale you will need
Some auctions will collect from you but it most likely costs but can be useful if you have a lot (no pun intended) to put in the auction. Otherwise, download necessary forms, fill them in and arrange a time to take your stuff to the auction. Be prepared; the seller's premium can add up to about 30% of the hammer price and some auctions may have a minimum premium for each lot. You may get more than you expect as some times the selling price can be quite high, or if only one or two people want it, or worse still only one, then you can get stung. On the other hand if you were buying you would be delighted with your bargain.
The advantage is that you deliver to the auction and that's it; no more hassle selling, posting, fiddling with bank transfer etc. It all depends what you want, quick disposal with a possible good price or a private sale at your price but a possible wait to get it.
Cheers, Phil
I put some guns and related items through a sporting auction.
By the time they were sold and the commission and catalogueing fee had been removed. I would have been better off weighing them in for scrap.
Never Again.

Looking for TO-6 Trigger unit unmessed with or T0-6 kit for 34
Auctions are like casinos.
Sometimes you win big.
But over the long haul, the house always comes out on top.
I put some (old shotguns & a few air rifles) in auction a while back pre being a forum member and I also got my trousers removed.
Use the forum to move them on so fellow collectors can benefit form your disposals, that's part of using the forums purpose after all.
You can always list buyer collects (will reduce interest though) once covid finally goes and we get back to normal.

I've had Good deals & great info from many in this forum.
Ive arranged for a local gun shop to sell my collection, over a period of time, ( I would hate to flood the market with BSFs and Vixens ) on a commission basis when I curl my toes up.
p.s. Dont get your hopes up Im feeling fine.

Posting guns isn't that bad, for all the rifles I've posted and recieved ive had little trouble. Selling yourself is the only way to get a decent price. Auction commission is eye watering
Simple fact is that anything other than posting, is going to cost you somewhere between a lot & a lot more.
Auctions are a huge risk because it's the bid then & there, if only 1 person want's it, it sells for next to nothing & then you pay commission on the price as well.
Buyer collects greatly limits the pool of buyers, because many people simply will not travel, for others the cost of the round trip is not viable & sadly where you are that will be a major factor.
more so with the licence issue.
Meeting in the middle is a hassle, costs you time & money & may not even be possible, plus you still have lots of potential buyers who still will not travel.
RFD-RFD costs both parties, but might be an option depending on the value of the gun, & how helpful your RFD is with his charges.
RFD to sell on commission, pretty much as above re charges.
