thanks for the Gat site information. After completing my Webley pistol collection (within my limited means!) I started to collect some of the so called "pop-out" pistols. There are some very interesting types, and prices are still fairly low for the more common ones.

Nice site!
Really nice to see the Web site and see some of the models I have had..... Never seen the red trigger, but where does my Gat rifle fit then..... Its not a pop out pistol!!
What an amazing collection. I have only ever owned three - Diana mod2, Harrington Gat and Limit - never realised there were so many variants.
I thought it was only the TJ Harringtons pop out pistol that was actually called/branded 'The Gat', Others then became known as Gat type pop outs!
Probably wrong though- Usually am!!

You are right, the 1871 patent is Quackenbush's second pistol patent, which decribes a concentric pistol where the barrel remains static when fired. It was cocked by pulling the barrel forward to compress spring, and then pushing the barrel back into the housing. If the barrel was pushed right in, then a bit protuded at the rear, where you could then insert the pellet or dart. The protruding part could then be pushed back into the housing when the gun was ready to fire.
Quackenbush was nothing if not a great salesman, as he advertised this particular type of pistol as capable of "throwing for a hundred yards". Throwing what he doesn't say, and I can only assume he means with a following wind of 100 mph.
