I made the plug from red plastic so it was easily visible. It had two O rings fitted to keep it in the barrel and the end was threaded M8 a little way so a bolt could be inserted to remove it if required.
I did this many years ago on the FWP 600 SSP series and the newer 700 and 800 series and it almost made them silent.
