In the early years, Law also included a lot of sex in his catalog. There were many pages of scantily-clad lovelies touting the guns. There were also several photos of the pretty ARH female employees in miniskirts filling orders in the shipping department. There must have been complaints, though, because by 1974 the catalogs dropped this practice entirely.

    Thanks Tony. Interesting.

Tom Gaylord discreetly didn't mention that Robert Law was a poor businessman compared to Robert Beeman. Devoutly religious Law used to send his guns out 'on approval', whereas the savvier Beeman always took cash up front, which is of course the norm these days. Beeman bought up the ARH stock at a bargain job lot price when the company went bust in the early '80s.

You can see for yourself how successful Beeman was right now, by looking at the Rock Island auction catalogues, where just part of his massive airgun collection is in the process of being sold off. (I've been putting some of the choicer items in the gallery recently.)

Edit: See this post for more ARH history.

A nice little read up on how modern Americans came to buying more European airguns.

I like this quote at the very end of Part 3: "And when you get stuck, my default is to ask on the Vintage Airgun Forum, which is the finest research place on the internet for collectible airguns."

I do like the picture of the guy with the claw hammer in his hand taking the gun apart, reminds me of the horrors i have seen when bodgers strip their guns down with club hammer and vice marks impressed everywhere on guns bashing the crap out of them to undo something then replacing a screw with a wood screw, enougthbto make a man weep.
