Gat Gun, How Does It Work??

Sorry for asking this every one but ive been trying to go over in my head how the good old gat-gun actually works. Is it an air pistol or does it merely work from the pellet being thrown from the action of the barrel extending forward at such speed and suddenly stopping( if I remember back to science that is kinetic or potential energy right?)

Personally I cant see how the pellet could be propelled by air due to the pellet pushing screw you place in the back, but I could be wrong

It's purely momentum generated by the barrel being propelled forewards. There is no compressed air involved so it isn't really an air pistol, more a catapult.

I think you will find there is an air chamber round the barrel in the body of the pistol. As the barrel moves forward the chamber compresses the air enters into the barrel through a small hole near the rear. This is why there is a probe to put the pellet passed the hole.

There is a catapult action but not nearly enough to propel a pellet or dart.

I think the barrell and the piston might be connected so that as the barrell flies forward the so does a small piston. Even so i stll think it's mainly inertia that flicks the pellets out.i Havent shot one for 15 years so i can't really remember.

Must be air pressure, or they wouldn't shoot spit balls. And I remember getting kicked out of class for that.

Corks would not go that far is it was not air pressure and it would not go "pop" when you fired them.

I just gave a Gat rifle to Lea Valley to use in a side shoot at our monthly Hunter Comps.

If it was momentum only the length of the barrel would slow the pellet down and it would probable just fall out the end.

Should be an interesting side shoot (it shoot about a foot high at six yards).

I'm no expert but when I used to run a shooting sideshow at our MAG Biker rallies, we used Gat pistols with corks to knock coloured wooden rings over the necks of bottles to win prizes. We found that the harder you pushed the cork into the end, the better seal you got and the cork was double in velocity over one that was loosely fitted, so I don't think inertia was the driving force, I think it was air....could be way off target though, like the corks always were!!

when I had one many moons ago i dont remember any opening in the barrel to allow air in, yet they do fire corks with a pop

It is very hard to see but if you have some rust or dirt in it you can just make it out.
