    Basic gun cleaning guide

Hi guys could someone give me a very quick gun cleaning guide for a break barrel rifle, e.g. what products to use where and how frequently. I'd hate my rifle to go to rack and ruin.

Firstly, get someone like Mimic or He Who Dares to check that it's empty.

Sorry, will be serious now. have a look at the Napier products which are designed for gun care. I would still use silicon based products on a springer rather than WD40 or 3 in 1 even though the manufactuer states that these are fine.

Everytime I use my rifles, I rub them down with some gun oil on a cloth and ensure that they are dry and free from moisture.

Use conger trace or monofilament fishing line, fold it in half and tie it to a peice of dowel longer than the barrel.

Get some gun cleaning patches and put some gun oil on it - not too much.

Insert the fishing line down the barrel, put the patch into the loop and pull through the barrel. Repeat till it comes out clean.

Suggest you do not use rods, jags, brushes.

Take great care with the crown of the barrel where the pellet exits as any damage to this area will cause you problems.

Wipe the barrel and action down with an oiled lint free tag after use and a satchet of Napier VP90 inhibitor in the gunbag and/or safe is a good idea.

If the rifle gets wet, take it out of the stock and dry stock and action. Then oil the action as above. Don't replace until they have dried properly.

Why does the dowel have to be longer than the barrel..?

Why do you think an air rifle would ever need cleaning ?

    (PS: they realy don't)

cheers guys thats very helpful. Do I need to grease around the seal where the pellet goes in, there is a thick grease on there already?

You don't want to be getting grease down the barrel

    How can this be Nathan?
Surely ANY precision tool does from time to time. (Including the barrel).
Or are you just taking the mick?

    Erm...some don't and some do.

shoot a group at 55 yards. clean the barrel then shoot another group.

If it tightens, your barrel likes to be clean, if it opens up, it doesnt.

Note however, that you may need to put 40 or so shots through before the group will stabalise.

Until you have done this you dont know do you.
