My lead backstop is 320x320x14mm fixed to a 3/4" ply. Took about 14kgs of lead if memory serves. I shoot at 15yds and at 20yds in the garden with 12ftlb rifles(.177&.22).
Works great, pretty quiet too.

I've also found that tearing out the front (glossy) page of the magazine helps, to get to the softer paper underneath. I also sometimes use an old padded jiffy bag (with the target taped onto it) and tape the jiffy onto the magazine.Originally Posted by Pod

Have you tried getting a tub of Plumbers Mate? i have and 'tis wonderful stuff.
I made a 6inch x 6inch frame and have 5mm ply on the back and fill it with plumbers mate to a depth of 1/2 inch. None of my pellets have made a sound when they hit the mark. In fact, i use this when i'm running my rifle over my chrony, which is linked to my pc in my bedroom - very effective so far.
I also use the plumbers mate frame in the garden for zero-ing in as well.
