I would say that it is the range that you are most confident with and one that you can hit at a constant rate of say a 1 inch group or better.

i use a rapid in 177 and will happily take on rabbits at long range out to 50/55 yards, but a rabbits head is still a small target at these ranges, but if the shot is well placed there is still enough energy left for a clean kill. the weather has to be right or they just get a new hair do.
mark.
An efficient pellet (e.g., JSB, Crosman Premier or Powapel) launched with 12 foot-pounds will retain 6, 7, or even a bit more at 55yards.
But putting that energy where it needs to go at such ranges -- when even a hint of wind can push an airgun pellet inches wide of the mark -- is the problem.

I shoot with hunters who own Rapids in FAC .22.
they wont shoot anything that is further than 40 Yards even though theyu could cleanly kill at 70 yards,
Their motto is if you cant guarantee a clean kill then dont take the shot.
Me I currently own a 177 at 12 ftlbs and waiting for my FAC. I limit myself to 30 yards.
My longest shot was a 56 yd rabbit under lamplight. aa 410 .177 with aa field pellet. head shot side on went clean through.
A hard and rare shot, if he wasnt about to run I would have tried to get closer but it was the end of a 3hr shoot with nil in the bag. Plenty of power left at that range.

Blimey, a 56 yard rabbit-that's about 168 feet-surprised you needed the lamp, a rabbit that size would have blotted out the moon

A 56 yard rabbit, blimey, thats 168 feet! Wouldn't a rabbit that size have blotted out the moon, never mind using a lamp

No, you misunderstand. The rabbit was 56 yds wide, his height was maybe 200 when he stood up. he was big. Don't take magic mushroom soup in a flask to keep warm, it plays havoc with your mil dots
sorry I'll get the hang of this eventually

From what I've seen of some so called Hunters shooting I am appalled, if they were to be let loose shooting rabbits we would have a lot of wounded ones runnig down holes and dying in agony.
The standard is a simple one, consistantly hitting a 25 mm disc up to 40 yards, a rabbits head is as big as a fist but to keep it humane I reccomend 25mm as the absolute mininum for practise.
I have shot a Rabbit at 60 yds with a .177 Harrier and that was because I was confident that my aim was bang on and the weather conditions were perfect. Please do not attempt to shoot rabbits or any other vermin without being at one with your rifle and your shooting is up to scratch.
