Taking airguns to France by car

Anybody know any just cause or impediment why a UK sub 12fpe air rifle can't be slung in your boot and taken over to France? Any paperwork or declarations required to be squeaky clean? Any packaging restrictions such as not taking pellets or needing to be locked case etc. (especially whilst on the ferry or in France itself)?

When I travelled by ferry to france in the summer the guy pulled me over in the customs channel before getting on the ferry at dover and demanded to search the boot. Then ask questions, he asked about weapons and i told him i had a swiss army knife, he then told me that was against regulations and tried to confiscate it!

In the end I told him I couldnt find it and must have left it at home, but a £400 air rifle may be harder to find. Prolly a load of ****** though just some bloke on his high horse, but check before you go

The power limit is lower in france than in the UK, so you'd need a permit for the gun.

Plus, if English customs found it, you'd be in deep trouble for a while. I know the gun's legal but HM Customs and excise are no respecters of the law, witness their illegal confiscation of cars at the channel ports.

Ho hum. It amazes me that UK customs are doing anything outbound from the UK. Don't they know that the economic migrants, drugs, booze, fags and Uzis are going the other way?

Not sure if its the same but went to France by eurotunnel the weekend, they make everybody get out of the car and ask the driver to lift the bonnet and boot, they search the glovebox under the seats and ask the driver loads of questions.

This only happened when leaving not coming back.

What on earth would anyone want with hijacking the Eurotunnel trains?

Surely they'd be quite easy to catch?

True... you can't exactly put a boxcutter to the driver's throat and say 'take me to Lebanon!'

Same thing here. Just been to France on the Ferry. British customs search on the way out but nothing from either end on the way back!?

>hijacking the Eurotunnel trains

I meant the ferry, but a eurotunnel train: stick a bomb on it and drive to central london??

I am sure they have to think of the stupidest idea and act on it

Customs!

A lot depends on how you intend going out to France.
If you via the Tunnel then expect trouble!
Customs are VERY HOT which is not surprising, conscidering the confinement of the Euro star.
Are you going on Hoiliday?
Do you have a house out there?

I have taken firearms out with little bother but then I have an F.A.C.& European F.A.C.

With Firearms basically you MUST inform the ferry operators that you intend taking a gun out to France.
leave plenty of time to get themselves organised!
They will take it off you and return it to you when you dock French side.
Problem you are going to have is you don't have a bit of paper registering it to you?
Not unless it's FAC rated then you should not have any trouble.
They are bound to ask why you want to take an air rifle out there?
You should also know you are not aloud to shoot fur or Feather with ANY AIR GUN!
Personally! forget it, I think it could get Messy?

Thanks for all the replies. I have about 4 (sub) 12fpe rifles I want to get over to Spain - and leave them there permanently. I will be taking a van over early next year loaded with furniture, motorbike, tools, etc. and thought that it would be a good opportunity to get the airguns moved, too. Unless I can get some paperwork to get them through France it looks like I'm knackered on that idea. Back to the courier (expensive and dodgy) or British Airways (expensive and inconvenient) options. Unless I take the ferry direct to Santander, but that's a very expensive crossing, a very boring 24 hours on the boat and irregular sailing times.

Evil thought - what's the power limit in Belgium (Zeebrugge / Ostend)?
