Hi and welcome!...if it is an early type (ie. the pellet tap opens on it's own as you cock it)...they are very small, and stamped in front of the trigger guard underneath....often hard to see if the back has been painted/re blacked over the years...later ones, I am not sure...but there are loads of helpful chaps on here who will know!....regards, ed

On the later ones the cocking lever has to be pulled back, it's on the square bit that the barrel goes into- crap description but i can't seem to explain it any better

You'll see it once the lever is cocked- if you've got bad lamps like me, keep a good hold of the lever AND rifle as you squint close up- better than a pounding headache

    Airsporter S Nos.

    Sounds like a Mk 6.
The nos. have a basic referrence to rifles manufactured but its more subtile than that and more serious "Beeza Geezas" on here will come along eventually and explain what and why no doubt.
Quite nice and a leading air rifle in their day before the Germans "invaded".
If its a good un, it'll still do the job.

    Right then !

A Mk. 6 made by BSA inbetween 1979 to 1983.

I had beauty a while back since sold, it constantly put out 10.8 ft lb and grouped well enough to hunt with although I never did.
If its in good fettle, it'll be worth a service and maybe a new spring.
Carl at Guns Intl., Barnsley knows them pretty well and has looked after mine in the past.
If you do decide to use it say with a scope, they have a bit of a kick so get a "spring gun rated" scope and mount it on a Sportsmatch one piece with a rear projecting mount. I think its a OP12C or summat like that. They're for Airsporters and Mercury's specifically.
Mine as with most of my Airsporters (and I had a few) liked a diet of Superdomes.

    Good Luck !

    Hi Rupert

The first letter (G in your case) denotes the calibre..

    G= 22cal

    E-177cal

The second letter denotes the mark- EG, mk1 or mk2, the mark letters correspond with the dates of production of that mark..

Yours is GL so that's (G)=22cal (L)=Mk5/6 which is 1974 onwards, there is i believe a mk7 airsporter but i don't know the designation for that and GM is for an 'S' model made in 22 from '79...

Ahhh- as Cobrasteve has just posted, GN designation is MK VII 1983 to 1986 (it appears i didn't know what was in my own post over on the BSAOG!!! )

    Date/cal letters are here

Hope this helps (clear as mud eh??? )
