If you have plenty of time you can get good results by using salt water to coat a degreased gun and leaving to rust. Until someone realised that using boiling water sent the surface black gun barrels were left brown with a coat of varnish/oil to stop further rusting.

that would seem simple enough, i take you just wipe over with a solution,allow to rust,boil,polish and repeat til finish is satisfactory? anyone tried this and how did it go? atb thanks also to el garro for the pm. with a similar suggestion
