How many BSA airsporter models are there

and how do you identify one from the other (assuming it does not state which model it actually is on the action).

Just acquired a clean example of one that wont cock so need to figure out what's going on there also.

    cheers Keith

Any advance on 10, prototypes or export versions perhaps?
Here's some references that might help with an ID using the serial number, & the exploded diagrams from Chambers should show you what to expect inside, plus any spares you might need

    Hi Eric

I think there was two types of Stutzen Airsporters, the taploaders and the RB2, fairly sure that they had different designations..

Also there's the standard RB2 Airsporter too as well as the carbine..

Is there any movement of the piston at all, or is it just stuck solid in the compression chamber?

    Was stuck solid,

which is what confused me, had a play earlier with some good old WD40, surprising how oil turns to glue over the years

now sorted...well sort of... a strip, clean and lube will get it back in order.

What would be the value of an average MK5 ?

You might want to have a new piston buffer washer to hand when you strip it, part no. PW031 in the Chambers diagram.
The plastic has a reputation for degenerating dramatically over the years, & in fact I thought that would be the cause of your stuck piston.

In my opinion, an average Mark 5 is probably going to be worth around £100 ~ £120. They are relatively common and not particularly desirable. If you are going to renovate yours, just enjoy it for what it is, would be my advice.

You can get most overhaul parts from John Knibbs or Chambers. Anything major starts to push the cost of renovation up dramatically - which is OK if its sentimental value, but otherwise can often make them uneconomical to repair (even if you can find the parts).

This is one of those instances where I hope someone chimes in to state I'm wrong.
    Happy Shooting!! Paul.
