Help with BSA Improved Model D

I picked up an early BSA Improved Model D cal .177 Lincoln Jeffries patent air rifle, from the Bisley Arms fair today.

Serial number is No 29577, not sure if this is 1909 or 1910, could be late 1909 or early 1910 is there any way to tell?

From what I can tell it looks all original but I am no expert.

Missing one screw which is annoying, see the pic below:

Does anyone know where I can find a replacement screw? I did have a look on John Knibbs Airgunspares and there is only parts
for BSA Standard rifle (Lever Axis Screw Part No: STD37) which doesn't look like it will fit Improved model D.

Also does anyone know of "How to Guide" to take apart Improved Mod D as I would like to check the internals, give it a clean as well as Molly paste treatment?

Can't wait to give it a blast down the club.

    Many Thanks.

The colour looks right, although it may be a bit shiny, perhaps from old oil coatings.

See here for dismantling instructions. It's easy to do. Give Knibbs a call. I'd be a bit surprised if they don't have what you need.

Hi, the keeper screw missing is the same screw that is also used in the front of the piston to stop the piston rod rotating, may be worth knowing this as surprisingly I have found that some suppliers dont!

From the pics you have posted it looks a fair unmolested original example with pretty good screw slots etc.

As Garvin says, surprised if Knibbs or Chambers won't have one. The main pivot screw is normally screwed right in, then backed out until the cut-away aligns with this screw, very rare that they line up with the pivot screw hard home, so don't worry if you feel you are "undoing" it as it has no bearing on it's function.

    All you need to dismantle etc. here;

Very simple, and essential on any new acquisition as they are very tough and well made, and can seemingly function fairly well with all sorts of damage, so always best to check. I hope yours is fine inside!

    Hello,

Only thing to add to the good advice and links above is the date for Ser No 29577 which is listed in the John Knibbs bible as made in Jan / July 1910 and despatched Jan 1910 /Jan 1911.

Nice examples of these fine old rifles seem to be getting harder to find, so well done and hope you enjoy owning and shooting your Improved Mod D.

    Regards

    Brian
