    S&W 79 valuation

    Hi,

Please forgive me if I've broken board etiquette but this is a duplicate post. Initially I posted this in Air Pistols but was advised to put it here instead.

    Essentially it's a valuation thread. I'm wondering what this is worth;

S&W 79 G matt finish, adjustable power not adjustable trigger, very good condition, comes with a spare set of seals and a receipt from Kuenga airguns for both those and the set recently fitted to the pistol. Also includes original bill of sale from Florida. Also user manual, little extra slip covering sight adjustment, and original box. All the box is complete but the foam is a bit musty, also there's cellotape over the lower quarter of the box, not holding it together it's just there, the box is intact if a bit scuffed.

Pistol works perfectly, but the tin of S&W pellets and CO2 is long gone.

    Thanks for reading

    Ben,
Ok, I had hoped you would have got a couple of valuations by now,and I am sure by the end of the week you will have a couple more from fellow collectors, anyhow here is my two pen' orth.
The 78 and 79g are very nice pistols and very collectable. As with any valuation it will based on personal experience of prices paid for the same model and prices do vary depending on the economy for one thing.

    Going by your description I would pay £ 150 - £175
A 78g was advertised recently on UBC for £225 and was sold, but we do not know the final price paid. It is best to advertise it at the upper end of the estimate as you can always lower the price if there is no interest.
Some folk may be willing to pay £200 - £225 for it, but personally I think that is too much.

As always you will need to host a couple of decent photos of the pistol to get a definitive answer.
Always wait until you have 2 or 3 valuations before making a decision.
Good luck with the sale, comrade.
    Pete.

Agree with Pete, I paid £175 for both my 78 and 79 G boxed with handbook and original receipt. You may get up to £200 posted
but the 78 G is the most desirable of the the two caibres.

I think it is worth £185.
Just to get in between Pete and Baz.
A lot of pistol for that compared to modern offerings.

Ultimately, pistols are worth what people are prepared to pay for them. The S&W is a relatively uncommon model these days, particularly the 78G, and they seem to attract these sorts of prices.

Whether they are worth a similar amount to, or even more than many new pistols depends on individual outlook and what people want from their pistols.

I mean, you could spend £150 on a Dan Wesson that might be worn out within months, or you could buy a vintage piece from the Golden years of air gun manufacture that will last for years, possibly decades.

Now is that irony or sarcasm Ian?
    I know what you mean.
Although I am strangely drawn to my new plastic Mauser

I can understand that - I also find them attractive, probably because they aren't yet another 1911.

I do like the look of the c96 but I am saving my pennies for the Webley mk.6 ,which is due out around Christmas by all accounts.

    Pete.
Me too. It may be much the same under the skin, but at least the Webley is a change from the usual DW/ S&W type revolver. I hope it lives up to expectations.

Thanks all for the replies so far.

I'd love to get a C96 myself but I couldn't deal with the materials.
