    Boxed pre-WW1 BSA

This rifle is coming up for sale on 30th Jan at :

I can't tell if the box is genuine. The 'B.S.A Rifle' writing is different than the ones I've seen up to now, the box lid has cross pieces at the ends, and the retaining chain is a modern replacement. Other than that, it looks right, I think. Nice accessories with it.

    Thanks Danny,

Does the lid look as though it is made from 2 panels to you?

The case finish looks rubbed down or faded but the lettering looks pretty crisp, which seems strange. Hard to say from the one pic and really something best handled before leaving a bid.

    Nice to see though.

I'm no expert but I have been copying a few pics over the last few years of BSA boxes,(in order to make my own) and the wood looks like modern pine in structure, much more open grain and a softer looking wood than old pine, and the brass fittings are all too clean.

It looks like weathered new pine to me.

The writing is not how any of the original ones were that I have seen, and looks more like a modern stencil style. I think that the joints are different to most as well.

Just my thoughts, and maybe someone will have an original just like it?

Nice Box though and certainly well made, just the type of thing I was looking at making, but with some older more original wood, and a hand painted BSA signature.

There is also a wood boxed service in the same auction, thought all the services were either travel canvas cased, boxed or in the bag?

    Any thoughts on it?

Looks like the same person made the service box.
