    MALOCH Gunmaker question Stirling. Perth.

Hi there, I wonder if any Scottish collectors know anything about the name Maloch.
I've not had much success other than to find that in the 19th C. There were Gunmakers with this name, some with two L's, both in Stirling (Maloch Michie and Crocket - Andrew Malloch ) and in Perth (P.D.Malloch Still there).
Two of the people with the names spelled differently are shown at the same address in Stirling at the same time (King Street 1865) so I imagine it's the same family.
The problem I have is that when I look closely at the 'Maloch' engraved on my lockplate it possibly has a tiny 'C' between the M and The C making it McAloch which is a name that I can not find any record of.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone here has seen this variation of the name.
    Thanks, Mel.

I have never heard of the surname McAloch. If it exists it's extremely obscure. As you rightly say, there were/are two gunmakers with the name Malloch. The more famous probably P.D Malloch, himself probably better known as an excellent angler, and for making the finest fishing reels of the time in addition to the gun-making business.
Malloch's is still in business as a gun and tackle dealer, rather than gunmakers. Still a good shop, and well worth a visit if you are in the Fair City.

I have an A.Maloch .41 rifle and I have tried to find out about this maker but the information is scant.
(If you have a trade label for this maker I would be grateful for a copy of it).
What I am reasonably sure about is that A.Maloch of Stirling has no connection with P.D.Malloch in Perth.
The shop was advertised at 59 King Street and also 61King Street and just prior to his retirement he was at 35 King Street.

    Thank you both, very helpful.
Enfield2band. By coincidence that is exactly what I'm researching. A .577 2 band P56, private purchase or volunteer.
    Sorry to say no label.

The first reference I can find of A Maloch is in 1859. It is possible that he was trading earlier but unless the newspaper has been put on the net there is no knowing.
If I could I would spend a couple of days in Stirling and have a look in their library to see what they have.

I have a few snippets of information regarding A Maloch, that do not relate to gunmaking. I have kept them to attempt to chart the business progress, but I have not got any further. One news item mentions a shooting competition with the Stirling Volunteers. If there is a record of them it might reveal some new information. I have not explored that avenue though.
If you are interested I will e-mail them to you.

My gun was proofed in Birmingham. There is the number 90 on the barrel which may be the serial number?
I think the proof house has all the records of guns submitted. I have been meaning to write to them and ask them if they have any details of this maker, with the No.90 stamped on the barrel, but, I have not done it yet.

    This might be of interest.

You've certainly put in some work there, thanks for sharing it. Interesting to see that the double 'L' sneaks in and out of the name during the 1851 to 1881 period, probably down to a clerical error in the census dept.
It would be nice to think that my rifle was used by the Stirling Volunteers but sadly it has nothing to indicate this, other than the name Maloch.

I'm glad I put the census information for you.

I said the earliest date is 1859 but I have just noticed that he is in the 1851 census as a Gunmaker.
    I should pay more attention

That will date any gun by him from at least 1851 to 1878. What I do not know if is his ex business partners continued to use his name on their guns?

I found a wee snippet from National Library of Scotland website that the name Maloch, Michie, and Crockart was still in use for the business as late as 1887. It is conceivable that their guns were still stamped thus around this time. A website for an auctioneers state that the company was dissolved in 1890.

    Thank you. That is interesting.

I'll see if I can find Trade Directories or Post Office directories for the period 1878 to 1890 and see what turns up.
