It will either be the cocking arms have worn/straightened at the ends, or the cocking slots have worn/deformed. Have a look at the top of the compression tube where the two slots are, is it bowed upward in the centre?
I've got a HW45 and when cocking it one or both of the cocking levers come out of the piston. I'm assuming either the levers or the piston itself is worn - but which is more likely? Anyone had any experience of this?

Better to admit you walked through the wrong door than spend your life in the wrong room
Thanks - hadn't thought of the tube itself... It was a bit bowed, but not much, the arms still pop out - although further down the slots. I'll try the arms next...
had the same issue. local gunsmith charged me £45 for repair, but never thought to ask what the fix was!
