Perhaps we should do a poll, fish scales or proper checkering. I know what my money would be on!
Fishscales
Old fashioned Diamonds
Grind it off and stipple the SOB
Other/Neither/Pie
I hadn't given it any thought until today.
It looks pretty good on a walnut stock. On beech it's not so good but can't say I'm that bothered.
I assume it sells well in the US, so Air Arms will continue to make it.
Keen but clueless..

Poll added. It doesn't show who voted for what, so your dirty secrets are safe.
Fish scale checkering? It looks like scabs.

Fish scales cured in 5 mins with a belt sander
I have an early Mk3 that has checkering instead of the fish scale & doesn't have the odd looking curve in the fore end, to my eye at least, much classier

ok, I admit it, I've got a problem.

ive a mk2 action ive put in a mk 3 stock I like the new stock,,,,i like it and am the only fan of the aa510 tc
Cant beat a classic skip line diamond checkering.
Stippling is nice but its a B**** to clean.
Fish scale on a rifle just looks weird to me.
Just thought I would post a pic of the two types of stocks side by side and was wondering if a more classic checking might look better on both

Too decorative and 'girlie' looking. Give me the plain stuff every day of the week.
Owned a 0.22 prosport with the old diamond style. Traded it for a brand new 0.177 with fish scales. Made sure I came home with the diamond stock and the fish scale stayed in the shop.

Agreed. Looks lovely and is grippy. Stippling looks and feels horrible; diamond chequering is OK if in the right areas. Air Arms have got it right, in my opinion. The S400 has chequering which wraps around the fore-end and is thus very grippy, and it looks good with the double line around the border of the chequering on the fore-end and grip. No other manufacturer seems to do that.
The ugliest chequering I have is on my Theoben Taunus, where the chequering is on a raised, squared-off lump on the stock.
Nicest stock for me by far is on an old Theoben Countryman. No stippling/chequering/fishscales or nasty squared-off edges. Just a lovely smooth and rounded feel to the whole stock.
I have a second hand TX200 HC with the diamond pattern, but I bid on a fish-scale stock on 3b4y. The trouble is it did really well and got on for the price of buying a complete new rifle, so I had to let it go.
