    45/70 powders

Just found I can no longer get H4198 powder which I use in my Marlin 1895 sbl. 26 gens with a home cast 405 gin bullet made from
old wheel weights works a treat. Accurate with enough hmph to be interesting but not excessively heavy on the shoulder recoil wise.
So what would you recommend as an alternative.?

Reloader 7 or if you can source some IMR 4198 work well in 45/70
And Alliant 2400 works very well for cast down loads.

I posted the same question about a year ago as I wanted to migrate my .45/70 to Viht powder.

I had very good results with N130 as a replacement for 4198 in "full power" loads.

D060 is fine for downloads if that's what you want.

    Cheers

Unique is apparently good for that round

I used to use Accurate Arms 5744 when available, great stuff.

I tried Reloader 7(?) when i ran out if the 5744- kick was brutal!

Thanks for the replies. I like a stout load but not too brutal. 26grns of H4198 was perfect with my home cast 405grn bullets.
Reloader 7 looks promising along with N120. Im now completely out of H4198 so will have a ride to Wragby this weekend.
ps, 12 grns of Unique works ok but not as accurate as my old powder.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with this, as I'm getting to the point where I'll be thinking along the same lines, before too long.

    .45-70

I use 23grn v110 in my trapdoor with 405 cast & 22grn with 500grn cast, I used the same loads with 2400 but the 110 works out cheaper, can't see any difference in point of aim or accuracy. I never got Unique to shoot well but I like it in 44mag.

Update. Went over to A and A gunsmiths to fetch my little Rossi .357 back after a repair and slick up job and asked Alan
if he had N120 in stock. Explained I was looking for a replacement powder for 45/70 as I couldn't get hold of H4198. He
says iv got 2 pots of H4198 on the shelf. Sold, so am now ok for a while. One of the guys I shoot with has the same SBL
Marlin and he is using N120 which seems to shoot very well.
Thanks for all the input. As a foot note I cant recommend A and A enough, first time iv used them and well impressed with
their helpful manner and prices. The Rossi is now as slick as a slick thing from slicksville.! Tim
