For it's now inspiring design lines I'm another vote for the Theoben Rapid in the PCP category

It gave us buddy bottle, magazine fed bolt action, floating barrel, reliability mostly borne out of its simplicity, and dominated in field and target until others started to copy it's features and back it up with better marketing and distribution

As much as it hurts to say it the HW77 in the springer category only because it pre dates the TX range by 7 odd years, 40 years later is still a premium rifle, only slightly bettered by HW with the 97 (drops iron sights, better options for silencers) - but if you had an original '84 model that had been shown the minimum amount of care and maintenance it would be just as good as a 2024 model fresh out of the box

    Mk1 HW77 for a factory springer.

PCP’s are all basically the same under 12 ft-lb, so…… anything without those godawful meccano stocks

Well today at the range I put in a sub-5p group at 50 yards with my SFS tuned LGU wearing her new Optisan CP 10x32, so that’s my vote.

Yes spot on. I’d say a 25mm piston ‘Mk 2’ HW77 with the removable front sight to give full range of sighting options, as a short-stroke and weaker spring with diopters can make an excellent bell-target gun or 10m practice rifle.

I’ve no experience with the Rapid but a top quality simple solid design that I’ve never heard a bad word about which is endlessly rebuildable must be the best answer to the question. And it doesn’t look like a dreadful tool from a science fiction film, it has a wooden stock and no ugly rails.

The best spring gun is a sorted Diana 460 Magnum, Steve Pope once offered to sort my one as he had not done one before, I wonder what he would have made of the design and quality construction

The best PCP is a Spartan the only really nice-looking PCP

I suppose it depends on what you mean by "the ultimate"

Yes, the Rapid was a game changer, & is still a very good rifle, I love mine, but "the ultimate" ?? I'm sure they can claim that.

At the moment you'd have to say the "ultimate" is the one that 'Ton' Jones just set the world record 2000yd shot with.
