/could this perhaps be the mystery stock? From the link posted above:
It appears that the EX88 was originally designed for the Scandinavian market where it was supplied with a maple stock. UK variants had beech stocks.
edit: and obviously if it is beech, it wouldn't have been oil finished originally ... that not saying some Philistine ain't re-done it of course ... if its the 'export' maple stock, I guess that would likely be originally oil finished. But I don't know
