It seems to be quite a new thing Tac - maybe over the last 5-10 years. Often newcomers to the sport, jumping in with both feet but no real depth of knowledge.

Imagine how long you would last at something like a classic car club and continued to called the camshaft the "valve bumper" even after the correct terminology was explained.

You could almost forgive an idiot reporter on a local newspaper, who has absolutely no knowledge of firearms, calling the trigger a "trigger switch" but there's no excuse for the holder of a FAC to do the same. Then of course, there's the guy with black tee shirt and camo trousers who been paint balling a couple of times and does a bit of airsoft thinks it cool to just call it a 'switch.

I know we all got to start somewhere and probably make plenty of mistakes along the way, but it seems rather strange that anyone should persist in calling an important component the wrong name and believe it doesn't matter.

    Hi All.
So some call em Heads, tips ,I call them heads ,so what,. What you all want to do is pick on something a bit more important than your pet hate.
Now my pet hate is people that refer to my firearms as my WEAPONS, now according to my firearms certificate I am allowed to have in my possession ,FIREARMS /RIFLES [for whatever use], no where where does it say the WEAPON may be used for what ever where ever. Nor do I have permission to buy a WEAPON. If y'all want to do some educating of Newby's the Press and people general ,tell all yer mates to stop referring to the Firearms As WEAPONS , and maybe you will do something useful for a change..

Well, it's not what they are called.

It would be like me claiming that your firearms are actually called waterarms.

The case head is the bit where the primer goes.

    Bullets do not have heads.

An assembled round of ammunition, in as much as it has a head, this head would be the case head surely?

Out of interest, what motivates you do want to use incorrect terminology like this, genuinely curious?

I think the majority of shooters do actually call them 'bullet heads' So many in fact, I've given up trying to 'correct' them.

If anyone could be bothered to start a poll, that would be interesting.

Not the one's I seem to know mate.

It can't be an Army thing, I am struggling to see where it all came from.

A poll is not a bad idea at all .

It's not an army thing indeed as they don't reload - generally!

I know some have got a little exercised over this but after reading all the responses, I'm going to take a much more relaxed view over people calling them heads.

Who was it said on here that it's intuitive for (bullet) heads to fit into necks which are above the shoulder......

but what if you load shoulder-less cases, like .357 or 38 special?
I call them bullet heads as it avoids confusion when speaking to other shooters who dont reload, when buying I usually say 357 heads

I been pushing Heads into cases for forty years, and yes I know all the Jargon you word police like to use just to show the rest of us
    how clever you is.
I have reached my mid seventies using words like Bullet heads is a simpler means of explaining to New Shooters than ,
Cannelure , ogive, BC ect, and you know all of the shooters that I have tried to help with reloading and shooting have turned out to be fairly good shooters.
    Some are even World Class.
So to you Mr battle of Hastings, why don't you try to be helpful to folk on here instead of being an arse. John F.

I'm always ready to help John, but unfortunately I think this is a case of "horses to water".
