I've tried the bottles but I can't get the buggers to explode. Do I need more air or something?

Probably, yes. Get as much air in as possible. More pressure equals a bigger bang. As with anything pressurised, use caution.

Shooting at dawn (neil180) on here just done a video on youtube great watch and he really liked them...

As for ice cubes its fun but i had to stop because i lost the recipy to make them.

I have some remington targets and i push them through an old chinese tin/tray into the ground that catches the pellets then i melt them down to make catapult ammo. Some might save it to weigh it in as scrap it might be worth while.

As previously mentioned, I bought a couple of Reflex Targets. Pricey enough at 40 quid each but it's nice to have some well made different targets to shoot at. In the video you will see that the dueling target snapped rubber bands. I had great fun snapping them to be fair - I went on to put some extension springs to replace them but these are too strong so I will get some weaker ones. I have also sussed why the rubber bands were snapping - they were working their way down the pole on the move able part of the target and getting wrapped round the bolt head. Cracking fun though and should last a lifetime.

I shoot all types of reactive targets but some of my favorites are chalk disc exploding/shattering to dust target, and spent shotgun shells, they are great fun, they fly up in the air and bounce, they are very strong too so last a long long time.

The other cheap target I use is mint imperials I hot melt glue them to golf tee's or a peice of wood as they explode when you hit them i also use pavement chalk I made a tube out of box section which the chalk fits inside and drilled a hole 10mm in size all the way through about 15mm from the bottom then fitted another peice of box section which fits inside this act's as a weight to keep pressure on the chalk so when you shoot through and the chalk drops down I buy it from the pound shop you get seven sticks in different colours
