Actually the people speaking welsh are the ones that could be prosecuted for racism. If you knowingly speak in an alternate language to avoid a third party, who has no understanding of it, it is racism.
You can spend thousands and still miss a barn door or spend just enough and enjoy yourself. If you haven't got the talent to start with a million pound won't fix it. Whippet, Russell, a few bang sticks and a flat cap. http://www.smart-tech1st.co.uk

If you ask Cameron it is. If anyone moves into a conversation which deliberately excludes another person then by definition, it is racist.

Bizarre - this was my local pub for several weeks last month when I was staying at a friends place in the village.
I thought the article looked very familiar, relieved to find it's a rehash of the article from a few years ago not a repeat incident.

    For info:
The pub got new management soon after that article.
The customers & new staff are all very friendly and welcoming (and always have been when I visited in the past) but it's easy to see why some locals would take offence at a "no Welsh" pub rule! Interesting that the locals consider it rude to speak in Welsh when non-welsh speakers are around so they switch to English. Very considerate!

The daft thing is, the pub is less than 50 yards from the library which holds "learn Welsh" evening classes every week.
Who decides to take over a pub in a foreign country without having some idea of the language the customers speak?

Just think - if the landlord had gone downstairs with a big stick to protect his family & property, this incident would never have got into the papers and would have been forgotten about years ago...

    cheers,
    Pete

Theres a pub in Bradford which has a sign above the door saying "No Blacks" and they don't get in trouble for it, they can't be made to take it down either. It was built in 1600's so its a grade listed building and cannot be altered.

So speaking in a language deliberately to exclude another person is not discrimination then. I suggest you read up on the law before you reply.

    I didn't say it wasn't discrimination, I said it's not Racist.

doing the first does not have to mean you are also doing the second

Check the dictionary, "Racism - the belief in the superiority of a particular race" nothing to do with choosing to speak the language of the country you are in

Not learning the language of the Country you move to is simply ignorant.

The Welsh consider themselves a different race from the British even going down the route of a Welsh Parliament. Therefore it is racism and no getting away from it.

Rob - as one who has experienced racism, I assure you that someone preferring to speak their native language in front of someone who doesn't understand that language, is absolutely NOT racism.

It's perhaps discourteous, even rude, but it isn't racism.
If you don't know enough to judge - don't judge
