    Walnut DIY stock -finally finished!

Well I finally finished my first DIY stock well, it's the first serious bit of woodwork since making a pencil box back at school some years ago

The wood supplied by vinny on here is American black walnut and is finished in ChrisC's CCL oil and some beeswax for a waterproof shine. The forend depth was set to just under 150mm centre barrel to belly to comply with UKAHFT regs and to help with FT sitters.

I must say the final result and finish is not what I would term as 100% perfect as this was a learning piece for me. Also it is going to knocked about in the woods and on HFT pegs so it needs to be easily restored every now and again without worrying too much about achieving total perfection

It will be getting its first outing tomorrow at an informal "extreme" club HFT practice

After this week of relatively relaxing oiling, next week is the start of the next one. It is in laminate and will hopefully have some classy cheek and forend adjusting bits on it. I have had some trouble with a couple of things. One, being what rifle to make it for. Two, how exactly to get the best final finish on pre-coloured birch ply laminate.

The second part can wait for a while but the rifle getting the new suit is going to be my trusty .22 HW80. I hope to finish it in time for the first UK Springer round at LV.

I would welcome comments from any experienced stockers on here, or anyone, come to that.

Thanks Cliff, plenty of hours of trial, error and occasional panic there. I should have been out working during some of January but found the stock making was more fun

Very nice, wish I had the skill, talent and patience to do this sort of work.

Amazing what you can whittle away at these dark winter nights

    Good luck, Phil
