Its new. I did try to remove the barrel actually but couldn't seem to shift it. I'll have another look tomorrow evening.

Most likely you have a barrel alignment problem.

The first step here is absolutely to remove the barrel/shroud. Assuming no obvious damage, clean, degrease, re-assemble and test.

If obvious damage, look for replacement parts. Easy if it is matt finished, harder to find for the older shiny "blue" versions. Try sales here or on other similar fora. Or "ze Germans" for new stuff.

If all that fails, an easy option is to buy the (unimpressive but functional) 11mm scope rail, fit a red dot, and adjust to your preferred range. Unless, like me, you just really don't like optics on pistols.

I doubt:

a) that the genuine Smith sight fits;
b) that it is worth the expense (I'm guessing £50+);
c) that it actually helps at all with this issue.

How are you loading the pellets into the mag, just seating to skirt depth, or pushing them further into the mag? Instructions say to push them deeper into the mag. Have you tried cleaning the barrel with supplied brush, yes it should come with one. Mine was low and left from new, but plenty of adjustment on rear sight. Sorry to have to ask, but you realise it's anti-clockwise to raise POI, also, is the front sight sat properly flush with the barrel shroud, I changed mine for the widest blade, but had to take a sharp blade to it to remove the burrs so it sat in the slot properly.

First, thanks for all the advice chaps.

I think it may be sorted but I'll need to wait for the weekend to shoot it to make sure.

Basically, I couldn't release the barrel shroud nut with the plastic tool even wearing a leather gauntlet! I finally got it undone with a large 8mm allen key so it had been done up far too tight at the factory and maybe that was distorting the barrel alignment.

There was no obvious damage so I reassembled it with the plastic key and using a laser bore sight i readjusted the rear sight and it ended up pretty much where I would have expected it to be. So looks like poor assembly at the factory.

As I said, I still have to shoot it to check though but looks promising.

I also got a new 6 inch 686 a couple of weeks ago. I cant remove my barrel either with the supplied tool but will try an 8 mil allen key. I would recommend cleaning the barrel, mine was choked with crap and definitely improved accuracy wise after a proper cleaning. The gun, for me anyway, is very challenging but hugely enjoyable to shoot. I love it and much prefer it to very expensive target pistols.

My own sights required a considerable amount of time to zero, but the gun is capable of good accuracy, only being let down by me unfortunately!
