    Is the material acid free?

No, not that stuff , the stuff that eats metal.

Hello! Plastazote is museum approved material. Acid and ammonia free, non-staining.

I never thought about acid free issues when I, made a form fitting Colt type case for my Walther LP53. Used regular syrofoam, white glue, and felt-type cloth. Are their issues to be concerned about?

Hi Jimmie, what a good idear and realy cheap to make as well, and great instructions to follow. and as you say as long as you have a band saw, l am lucky in that l managed to pick up a set of old architect planing/drawing draws, which hold about 20 pistols each draw, and plenty long enough for rifles as well.

    Mick.

Thanks Jimmy, I was referring to the cardboard. Is that of the same quality?

According to Daler Rowney the mount board is pH neutral. You could buy museum grade mount board if you wish from Daler Rowney. The box material does not come into contact with the item.

    All the best,

    Thanks.

Your architect/planning draws sound just the job! I have my eye on something similar.

They have one drawback, which is they mysteriously fill up....

Very useful article on the boxes thanks

Flint, I don't know if felt is acid free, but I suspect if it was it would say so? That said there are plenty of old shotguns transported in baize lined cases, and if its good enough for them.....

Felt is traditionally made using urine, which contains uric acid. I have no idea if it is still used,or if the final product still contains it.

    Is felt different to baize?

I am working on a wooden box for my Tempest, but haven't chosen a lining yet. I was thinking of using something green and furry, (but not a sloth!)

If there is a better solution out there, I would be interested to know.

    Cheers,

    Mark.
