What is the most common calibre for the Giffard pistol ?
Brian
The law is that antique guns may be freely owned as a “curiosity or ornament”. And a Giffard is an antique.
(There are specific laws relating to cartridge ammo. I.e. possession of the ammo without FAC is illegal. Irrelevant here, but if you own, say, a Dutch model 1873 9.4mm revolver, that’s fine, but owning a single assembled round of the 9.4mm cartridge, even without owning the gun, is illegal.)
Apart from that, the general view has been that a (single? occasional?) test-fire of an antique is legal. Regular shooting isn’t.
Repeated shooting takes it out of the “curiosity and ornament” category and requires licensing. It’s obviously a slightly grey area. That’s how British law works.
I knew of cases in the past when owners of original 1800s black-powder pistols would hold some as unlicensed curios, and some as S1 shooters, and occasionally legally swap between the two categories.
If a pistol will set you back 2.5, what would a rifle cost? Ish?
ok, I admit it, I've got a problem.

Actually lucky to get a nice Giffard pistol for £2,500. They are quite rare, even on the continent. Long guns depend on calibre and whether they are rifled or not, also whether made in London or France.
Price range over the last few years has been generally between £750 and £1350. Cased or boxed ones can be a lot more. There are always chancers asking much higher prices but they tend to have items for sale for a long time.
Thanks to all who took the time to reply and provide their inputs. I'm hoping that maybe something might surface at the next Kempton meeting, but I won't be holding my breath.

Dear old Keith Bayliss offered me a Giffard pistol for £2500. He lived near my dad and I used to visit him at home and saw some amazing other items in his collection which I would have loved to own.
