Well another disappointing day with the 97. I am withdrawing it from sale and bringing it to get some advice and opinions. Favourite so far is sticking the muzzle in the ground and growing beans up it

I'll wager there's not a lot wrong with the 97, Pete. Have you tried it with some FTTs? Bring it along, let's have a go and we'll see what it's up to.

Yes mate. It was doing touching groups at 50yds. Now shot gunning. Same tin of pellets. I have always had to work harder at shooting this compared to the tx200 but accuracy has always been achievable. 3 people tried today with the usual jsb and fts couldn't hit a barn door

Mmmmm.....Confuscious says, "very puzzling". So, possibles......and I'm sure you'll have done most, if not all, of these, but it's always worth working through methodically and calmly.......

Check stock fastenings.
Check scope fastenings.
Try some totally different batches / tins of pellets. Hoping this is where the issue lies and it wouldn't be the first time.
Chrono check for consistency.
Try a different, known to be okay scope. Or try that scope on another known to be good rifle.
Clean the barrel - I have never, ever had to do this on a springer, but you never know. The crown hasn't inadvertently been damaged, has it?

After that it'd be strip down time to give everything a look over, including changing breech seal as a matter of course and checking the piston seal. Although very rare indeed, did I once see mentioned many, many moons ago of the possibility of barrel security bring an issue? Really can't see it being this, but worth checking for peace of mind whilst it's being naughty.

Hopefully it'll be one of the easy "fixes" (it more than often is) and you can regain confidence and continue to enjoy this fine rifle. Fingers crossed for you.
