why is the rapid 7 still so popular

I have had hundreds of air rifles, but only one Rapid!

It was by far the most disappointing thing (not just gun) I have ever owned. It had been buggered about by a previous owner, the barrel was ruined, the block had been mullered and it couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo.
I spent a lot of money and time fixing it's various issues, but it continued to let itself down at every opportunity.

I have heard many owners at the Bash say that they are great cos they can be fixed without special tools. I have then gone on to watch said owners spend the entire weekend trying to make them work, without specialist tools.

IMHO they are outdated, ugly cack and should be avoided at all costs. Buy a springer, it's just as accurate and will still work when you get into the field
