    Boring Packaging.

What a pity that Webley packaging went from the amazing artwork present on pre-war models to boring old plain boxes at the end of production. The same is true of pre-war pellet packaging. How much more attractive to particularly younger buyers these early boxes and packaging must have been.

More or less everyone went over to 'plain brown boxes', or white in the case of BSA, even places like Weihrauch. I think in part it made theor products seem more serious. Colour came back as manufacturers adopted the boxing standards being set by airsoft. But, yes, nice box art is good. My favourite is the Webley 'spiv'.

Amazing the care that went into this prewar artwork:

Meanwhile, the Germans were employing talented artists for their advertising!

Note: Allen voran wasn't a bloke called Al, it meant 'above all' (ie. the best)...

    Hi Danny,

Works of art in their own right.
There's something about commercial artwork that really appeals to me.

Is that the youth on the 1970s boxes? He does look like he’s one shot away from a trip to youth court.

Think the 'spiv' was more '50's - the bloke was aiming his gun directly at the viewer...Used on Webley POS.
The youth on the '70's Junior Mk 2 box was actually holding a Premier. Yes, looks like he's heading for Borstal!

    I'll get my anorak

Yes some great artwork from years ago. l bet it would be cheaper to produce artwork like that now then it was at the time. that is why some people collect pellet boxes and tins, just for the artwork.

They'll ask that about you one day, John.

So young, so talented, then he brought out that BSA book.....

    Did he peak too soon?

Only teasing, mate - it promised much, and delivered more.

They’re no patch on the older stuff, but I have a liking for the 70s/80s Webley pistol black boxes, with the included historical poster and the removable bit of foam (or whatever it was) to allow the gun to be boxed with the scope and rail. Maybe because that’s what my first airgun came in.

    Typhoon Box

My first webley purchase. 1978? Still have the Typhoon. Sadly the lovely box is long gone.

That’s my first airgun (if it was a .22”)!

My first ever new, boxed airgun was a Webley Tempest in one of those black boxes. The joy of getting it home and opening the box is probably what drives me even today.

Trouble is, the feeling I get now, 40 years later, still chasing that particular dragon, is no more than a faint echo of that teenage excitement. Doesn't stop the collector's urge to accumulate though.
