Alistair, it could be any of the reasons (or combinations thereof) as cited by the collective above. As well you will be aware.

Nearly new? I guess you mean hardly used? A service may well help and I'd be taking a look at the buffer. Guessing you'll have fitted a new breech seal?

It's a trick question. There is no inaccuracy issue. 1 inch at 10 yards is pretty good for a Mercury.

Of course its a trick question!
He claims that the barrel tension is correct, which is obviously a lie.
How on earth could a Mercury barrel bolt have the correct tension, they come loose as fast as you cock the rifle a couple of times.
    Too many airguns!

Lots of shims under the nut and bolt head to get enough compression on the forks.

Thats a bit strange tbh,I used to hit spent 12 bore cartridges using open sights
over and over down the fields until I couldn't really see it anymore ,so quite a bit further than 10 yards lol.

Wrong calibre but right track I think, BSA (and Webley) always had slightly different bore sizes to the european makers, try some ely wasp or similar pellets and things might improve

My .177 meteors which are of the same period, perform very well with JSBs, so modern pellets are not the issue.
However, modern Superdomes, which the OP used, are not always great in many guns.
