Jeez - with one exception I'd be pleased to get 1" groups at 10 yards with my Wobbleys
    Webley Mk3 x2, Falcon & Junior rifles, HW35x2, AirSporter x2, Gold Star, Meteors x2, Diana 25. SMK B19, Webley Senior, Premier, Hurricane x 2, Tempest, Dan Wesson 8", Crosman 3576, Legends PO8.

    f. The choke is at the wrong end of the barrel.

Worth pushing a pellet up the barrel to check.

Of course its a trick question!
He claims that the barrel tension is correct, which is obviously a lie.
How on earth could a Mercury barrel bolt have the correct tension, they come loose as fast as you cock the rifle a couple of times.
    Too many airguns!

Ah yes ... that would do it. 'Shed tuner' once mentioned it as a possibility with BSA barrels... This will be the first point I'll try. Then it's getting stripped and scrubbed and relubed.

Right, it's getting a direct comparison with an HW35 at the end of this. They were competitors at the time, and the Mk IV is the 'best' of the old school standard Mercurys... so lets see how best it really is...

The dreaded "reverse choke" seems, at least to me, to be present in the more recent supersport/lightning barrels (recent like after 2000), not in the earlier ones.
    Too many airguns!
