I just glued a HW80 breech seal in the last one that I played with.
It was a Aluminium washer Phil has help me & now it's out. Thankyou all
Leather seems to be the material most often used for breech seals, up until synthetics took over, so if the original material is unobtainable, leather would seem a perfect alternative, and has been used for years.
I'm presuming the 'Red Fibre' use for the original Service seals was of similar material to the red fibre washers commonly used in the old days. I have a box full of them, but none of comparative size to the Service breech seal.
The reason W&S used a hard red fibre washer/brass inner was because when closing the bolt it pulls the breech end of the barrel across and if soft the handle may not return to the same position each time. This doesnt matter when both sights are on the barrel but could give problems if using the body mounted aperture sight.
The other factor that may have made them arrive at that position is that most MK2s fitted with a softish breech seal allow the bolt knob to hit the cyinder which over time will cause a dent. Not good when using a metal ring as a piston seal.
Worth checking the cylinder for tight spots?
