Just to qualify Dave's answer.. 12/6 ftlb without a licence..

If you want the extra hassle of applying for a Firearm Certificate, you can go as high as you like, so you will see talk of 20, 30, 40 or more ftlb rifles
(Never heard of a FAC rated air pistol..??)

It is certainly possible but they would be S5 prohibited as a "small firearm".

Possibly thats the reason.... but BP pistols are still legal, and they put out a lot more than an FAC rated air pistol would...

.. just highlights the oddities of the Uk Firearms licensing..

True. Muzzle loaders are specifically exempted, thanks to strenuous lobbying by the then chairman of the MLAGB.

I think that the reasonong is:

    1) they are not favoured by criminals

    2) they are probably too difficult for most crims to use

    3) it tales so long to load one that they are unlikely to be used in the heat of the moment. (I think this is also why authorities insist on separate storage for cartridges)

    4) (probably) cannot be left loaded for any length of time and still be useable.
