    Massive variation?

I'm loading some .38 sp and getting huge variation in power. I am using home cast 158gr bullets with vectan A1 powder.
    With 4.5 grain I am getting 122- 230 ft/lb, so I upped it to 5gr and am getting 166 - 280.
I am using a LMBR chrono in the cellar, could this be a lighting/smoke issue? I can't use the pistol in the garden and was loading some up for the range tomorrow. Should I just retest in daylight then, or could it be something else?

The lmbr isn’t overly sensitive to ambient light as it is self contained. I have my two mounted in wooden boxes with a plastic barrel guide set a few inches back. Smoke and blast really upsets the reading from too close. Try moving back a foot or two.

Steel plate in the back to trap airgun and rimfire. For anything else the plate is removed and shot into appropriate backstop. Yellow plastic lip is a barrel support and guide. I made a plastic lip to hold an aiming card for longer range shots.

Thanks both. Stood further back with bright sunlight I got a spread of 922 - 989 fps. Not great, but close enough for jazz!
