As others have said, depends on what you're doing. Nowadays, I just plink out to 20 odd yards absolute max, in dry weather, so am happy with a 3-9x40 cheapie. If I was hunting in all weathers & at longer ranges. it would be different. As it would be if I was into FT/HFT.

I like the hawke fast mount series for starter scopes.
Had 2/3 now on cheaper setups and they work well

NIKKO STIRLING MOUNTMASTER are nearly half price at the sportsman gun centre.
If you don't like it you could probably sell it for what you paid.
Even better looking than a HW35
Nikko Stirling Panamax would be my choice.
