    Didn't the first HW 97's in .177 have square section springs in them?

    I put one is an HW80 once and it could shoot through engine blocks.

    I'm sure they'd make excellent piston return springs in elderly diesel engines.

    the spring is not your problem... you need a new piston head/sealing arrangement, as per my reply on your other "meteor musings" thread. More spring + bad sealing = horrible, self destroying recipie for disaster...

    Yep, increasing swept volume slightly but, and much more valuable, increasing efficiency so as to be able to use less spring should be the aim, resulting in a much more pleasant powerplant and less stress to the internals.
