    I wonder if they only offer the F2F option for section 1 & 2 firearms and modern post-39 airguns? And so to reduce their workload the only option they offer for postable pre-39-ers is to use a courier. I'm surmising though.

    Yes, I meant generally. Holts and Southams are rfd transfer only I think.

    Every auction has a genuine bargain or two amongst the lots, for the keen eyed. Psychology definitely comes into play - mostly in an unwillingness to be outdone by the other bidder, by the inexperienced or the collector suffering from terminal desire. It is all part of the fun of auctions really and there is an element of luck involved too. Private prices then start sneaking up towards the exorbitant ones paid in auction. Tbh so long as you buy good condition examples of rarities you will probably get your investment back in time.
